Tips for planning Mangi Tungi, Jain Tirth visit

Mangi Tungi (MT) is one of the best place to visit and get blessed especially those who follow Jainism or hiking. This place is located in Tahrabad which is about 125 km from Nashik City in Maharashtra.

Let me share my personal visit experience with you. I went with my family and started my journey from Talegaon Dabhade (Pune district) in my car in the morning at 11:30 am and reached Mangi Tungi at 7 pm in the evening. I recommend you if you are travelling from Pune start a little early like 8-9 am as you get enough time for roaming around and take rest post dinner. You will get four tolls in between Pune and Mangi Tungi. Try to reach Mangi Tungi by 6-7 pm. Check your estimated time on Google Maps for Mangi Tungi. If you are travelling with other mode of transport like train or bus then arrive at Nashik city and from there you have an option to hire a cab or a Local bus (bus takes around 3 hours to reach Mangi Tungi)

  1. Important tips on travel by Car – Get enough petrol and have some cash in hand. You will come across three small villages from Nashik like Malsane, Deola and Satana. The road is little rough after Deola village. You need to take a left turn from Satana road (the welcome board of Mangi Tungi is displayed beside the road. Calculate your fuel consumption with an easy formula (total km / mileage of your vehicle) = no of liters of fuel required. Multiply it with per liter rate and you will have total amount of fuel spend.
  2. Stay at Dharmashala – There are two dharmashalas at Mangi Tungi. One is when you take left from the Satana road named Shree Gyan Mata Mandir. Room charges AC = INR 500 /-, Non AC = INR 400 /-. You can book it through Mangi Tungi website or call the guy for pre-booking questions.

There are rooms available in Mangi Tungi itself. Hot water (through common boiler) is available at Dharmashala. Mattress, two bed cots with pillows and four blankets are available. Per room capacity is 5 people. Each room is attached with a toilet and bathroom inside separately (beware of mosquitoes). I recommend you stay back near Mangi Tungi Dharmashala as it is convenient to reach the mountain as Shree Gyan Mata Dharmashala is only 6 km away from Mangi Tungi.

  3. Glimpse and timings for overall trek – Basically you should start as early as possible so you will have lesser exposure to sunny weather post 8:30 am. I recommend to start at 5 am. The mountains are 2 km away from main the dharmashala. You will get a shuttle service every 10 minutes from Dharmashala (Rs 20 per person, to and fro). You can get the coupons from Dharmashala itself.
    • Start at 5 am
    • Climb till Mangigiri around 800 steps (approx. timings 1.5 hours)
    • And then start climbing Tungigiri which will take additional one hour to go and come back to Rishabhgiri.
    • Rishabhgiri is having 108 foot tall Lord Rishabh bhagwanji. There is lift which will take you to Rishabhgiri after you walk for a 800 steps (approx.)
    • You will complete the entire route of Mangi Tungi trek in 5 to 6 hours.
    • Come down at Rishabhgiri and get a coupons for cabs (Rs 50 per person) which goes to a point where your first coupons (Rs 20 per person ) will take you back to Dharmshala. At this location only 4 wheel drives are allowed or you have another option to get down through steps. I recommend you get down via vehicle as it will save time.
    • Dollys are available for the entire trek for Rs 3,800 per person and baby carriers person are also available for Rs 700 per head.

Arrive at the cab point A. Start climbing from here. Reach D (Junction). Start climbing Mangi and reach B. Climb Down to D and climb to Tungi C. Go back to D and arrive at E which is Rishabhgiri. Go back to Dharmashal via Cab which is available at Rishabhgiri.

Monkeys are your friends – Beware of monkeys! This warning is applicable only if you start teasing them. You can carry shoulder bags and keep your valuables inside (*Mobile phone if really required is to be kept inside the pocket). No small hanging bags are recommended as these monkeys try to draw the bags and take away with them. Do not carry mobile phone, money, or other valuables in these bags. Keep some cash in your own pockets.

Solve WiFi connectivity issues – Use 5Ghz frequency

The primary differences between the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz wireless frequencies are range and bandwidth. 5GHz provides faster data rates at a shorter distance. 2.4GHz offers coverage for farther distances, but may perform at slower speeds.

If you live in a condo or an apartment, for example, you probably don’t need 2.4GHz WiFi frequency. I have a lot of IoT at my home and I used to have issues when I used 2.4GHz frequency on those devices.

Typically, WiFi routers come with two frequencies. Make sure that you connect your phones, tablets, and laptops to 5.0Ghz. Here is how I did:

1. Connect to both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz
2. Set 2.4Ghz to “auto join” off — this way your devices will not auto-join it.
3. Set 5.0Ghz to auto join” ON — this way your devices will always auto join to 5.0Ghz frequency

wifi Netgear router

If you think some devices are far enough to catch 5.0, then set 2.4 for those particular devices to ensure that they are still online.

Ever since I made the changes above, all my Internet of Things devices, phones, tablets, laptops always keep connected.

Choosing wattage for your smart light

There are big differences in prices when it comes to wattage of smart lights. For example, in Jan 2018, a MagicLight smart light which is 40W equivalent costs $19 plus taxes in Seattle, WA, USA. While same brand bulb which is 60W equivalent costs $31 plus taxes.

[Bonus read: Benefits of Smart Lights, if you have not read it already!]

I prefer buying 60W as that gives me a flexibility of dimming it to 40W equivalent whenever needed or according to my scene settings while having a 40W smart bulb cannot give you a flexibility of 60W when you would want. You will have to replace it with a 60W smart bulb.

However, due to cost and desire to have 60W equivalent, I switched from MagicLight to Lohas smart bulbs.

There are definitely pros and cons when you buy something branded like Philips vs. local bulbs such as Lohas. One major difference is the color setting. I tell my Google Assistant to set the light to Bottle Green and it sets it to very much like a blue. However, when I tell her to set smart light to Dark Green, she does the job perfectly. Maybe there is a problem in the software that Google received from Lohas but who knows and I don’t care as long as I can at least get some kind of green!

This is literally how my dog has grabbed my laptop as I am writing this post!

Benefits and uses of smart lights

Smart lights such as Philips Hue, MagicLight, MagicHue, Lohas bulbs, and so on have a lots of benefits listed below. See which bulbs I prefer and why. It is important to choose right size bulb in the respective fixture to avoid excessive heating and thus a risk of fire. See the differences between various types of bulbs.

Multi-functional use of smart lights – regular lighting and ambiance setting

The smart bulbs can help you set a different ambiance depending upon the event, time of day, or your mood. Dim the lights and set a romantic mood. Set all lights to full brightness and feel happy and bright on a gloomy day!

It’s the same set of lights and you can use them to use for regular everyday lighting or specific functions. My lights turn in to various colors typically on a Friday night and help me kickoff the weekend with even more fun!

Walls colored purple using smart lights

Change color of walls through smart lights

Set color of your one room to rosy red, kitchen to bright purple, and living room to natural green–all without having to repaint, just with a click of button or a voice command to home assistant such as Amazon’s Alexa or Google Home.

Set scenes and set them automatically on certain conditions

Using free IFTTT (if this then that) service, you can set scenes, turn off/turn on smart lights, and so on based on natural conditions such as:

  • Turn on specific lights or set a specific scene with sunset or with an offset such as turn on lights 30 minutes after sunset since sometimes there is still enough light in certain areas after the official sunset
  • Dim specific lights at your bed time
  • Turn the lights down low with sunrise
  • Change the color of the lights to day white if it is raining
  • and so on!

Choose colors and scenes to compliment your mood with atmosphere.

My dog doesn’t have to stay in dark during winter times when the days are short as my IFTTT settings turn a light on for my doggie boy!

Save electricity / be eco-friendly

The definition on Wikipedia for Smart Lights is: “Smart lighting is a lighting technology designed for energy efficiency.”

With lights turning on and off automatically as setup, I think it will contribute to the eco system when seeing combined savings from many households together. Now for example, our kitchens have multiple lights but if you had smart lights setup, you could just turn on one light instead of all four if you are just grabbing some water! I work in the front part of the kitchen like near the electric range more than the back side, so I turn on front lights accordingly.
